What I didn't miss while I was in Bahrain

Telemarketers and the like. I got two phone calls in a matter of half an hour - one for the local Police Association and one for some sweepstakes. I did not miss these one bit. Sure, I got something like that while in Bahrain, but it was in text message format, informing me what doctors were going to be at the hospital I visited with those pesky heart problems, and from the phone company letting me know that due to the holiday (pick one) I now have an extra 1BD credit on my phone! WOO!

Seriously. I guess I need to find that Do Not Call website again and put this number on it. Oh, the joys of moving around every few years.

Cultural differences, based on a pedicure

Seriously. I had a pedicure today, and I think this is the first time I have ever received a compliment on how white my skin is. Yes, I'm really white everywhere except my face, arms and hands. But it made me realize the difference between the culture in America and here in regards to skin color. Most of us white folk in the US spend thousands of dollars and hours of time going to the beach, on self-tanning products, and tanning salons. I know I was shelling out $60 a month for the stand-up tanning beds in San Diego, for goodness sake! In the grocery stores and pharmacies here, there are tons of products for skin-lightening. White skin is coveted here in the Arabian countries and women will fork out the duckets to get it. The fairer-skinned ladies are considered to be the most beautiful. Think about that next time you sun yourselves into a piece of leather, I know I will.

And I can't knock the cute white toes I have now.

(Oh, and if anyone was wondering, my car is fixed. I got it back yesterday. Yay!)

More about the car, and a card

Seems as though my coolant pump is broke-ed. They didn't have the part, so I had to drive to the BMW dealership and get it myself. I'm just glad they had it. It was the original part that broke. I guess that says something, right? Seems as though I was right about the heat killing it. With the coolant pump broken, coolant leaked everywhere and it kept overheating. It is supposed to be fixed tonight and tested tomorrow, along with the engine getting checked to see if any coolant got into it and cleaned up. Yay!

A friend at work found out she was pregnant, so I made her a card.

The heat killed my Beamer

Sounds like a song title, doesn't it? I give it a 6. It has a good beat, but I'm not sure you can dance to it.

Anyway, it is 106 degrees here, and my old (1989) poor car doesn't like it. It keeps stalling on me, even if I drive hardly a mile. It's at the mechanic right now, and I feel like a traitor driving a candy apple red 2006 Nissan Tiida. It supposed to take four or five days for it to get fixed. I'm not really concerned about the cost - labor is dirt cheap here.

This pretty much was the perfect ending to crappy week I had. I got off leave last Sunday, and everything that was supposed to be done never actually got done. So I was busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest. I never arrived home before 6pm all week. Even on "Friday". I stayed a hermit all weekend, at one point turning off my phone completely. I have been avoiding people like the plague. I'm afraid I'll go postal. I hope this week is better.

I think I've socialized enough now, so I'm going back to my hole.

Eid Milaad Saeed!

(Happy Birthday in Arabic)

My landlady and her family are having one righteous birthday party next door. They are alternating between some rocking Arabic tunes and the more popular Western music. Currently, I'm enjoying a very loud My Humps. Yes, you heard me. The Black Eyed Peas song about T&A. Gotta love Bahrain.
